The New York Liberty did not renew the contract of head coach Sandy Brondello, effectively releasing her from the position less than a year after she led the team to its first WNBA championship in 2024. The decision came shortly after the Liberty were eliminated in the first round of the 2025 WNBA playoffs by the Phoenix Mercury

Despite player support, the organization considered a coaching change necessary to position the team for future success in a rapidly changing league. The Liberty have since begun searching for a new head coach to lead the team into the next era .

In summary, Sandy Brondello was released after four seasons, including a championship year, with the Liberty citing a strategic and forward-looking reason for not renewing her contract rather than performance alone
