The Quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament was underway. With the St. Johns Red Storm and the Marquette Golden Eagle on the court and ready for the showdown of the evening.

Tip off-

With a backcourt violation by the Red Storm in their first possession, and a missed 3 by Ponds in the corner, Marquette seemed to gain energy as they took a quick 4-point lead in the early minutes of the 1stquarter; but St Johns guard Mustapha Heron and guard Shamorie Ponds would fight to keep the Johnnies offense flowing.

Unable to grab a rebound St Johns missed a few 2ndshot opportunities, the turnovers didn’t help them either as they trailed Marquette 36-22 wit under 5 minutes on the clock. By the close of the first half, Marquette was shooting 50% from 3, 54% from the field, and 80% from the line, while St Johns was shooting a mere 13% from 3 and less than 40% from the field. They found themselves down 12 at the end of the first half. The Johnnies would have to dig deep, and tighten up on both ends of the floor or their BE Tourney visit would be soon short lived.

The Red Storm Johnnies must’ve received a much needed conversation during half time; the started the 2ndhalf aggressive and alert, scoring with back to back buckets and an emphatic dunk my Simons, the Johnnies cut Marquette’s lead to 6. (43-37)

Big East Player of the Year, Markus Howard continued to shine offensively. Scoring shot after shot, finding his teammates and defensively alert; he led his team to a 20-point lead with 11 minutes on the clock. St John’s looked disengaged, tired, lost, and downright bad. Shooting airballs, missing defensive assignments, they seemed to have just given up. Marvin Clark II fouled out with 7 minutes left on the clock, and St. Johns found themselves down 30, and would never recover.

Marquette defeats St Johns 86-54. Marquette advances to the Semifinals.

Only two players finished in double figures, Shamorie Ponds with 13 points, going 4/13 from the field, and Justin Simon with 14 points. Big East Player of the Year Markus Howard notched 30 points, 8/15 from the field.
