Harvey suffers first loss of year as Mets fall to Cards

Adam Wainwright pitched seven shutout innings on his way to his major league leading 10th win of the year as the Cardinals defeated the Mets 2-1 Thursday afternoon.

Wainwright was dominant, striking out six and allowing just four hits during his outing. Matt Harvey was almost able to match Wainwright, but an RBI triple by Matt Carpenter in the third gave the Cardinals a 1-0 edge.

Harvey was great, striking out seven and scattering five hits over seven innings, but the one blemish was enough to drop  his record to 5-1 on the year. Unfortunately the offense struggled, leaving eight men on base despite a three hit effort from David Wright.

The bullpen also let down Harvey, as Latroy Hawkins allowed an RBI single to Allen Craig in the eighth that forced home a runner inherited from Scott Rice. This run became crucial after Marlon Byrd hit a solo homer in the ninth off of Cardinals’ closer Edward Mujica to bring the score to 2-1.

Byrd’s homer was followed by a John Buck double that set the Mets up with a man on second and just one out. Kirk Nieuwenhuis moved the runner to third on a ground out, but pinch hitter Josh Satin struck out to end the game. It was Mujica’s 19th save on the season.

The Mets will say goodbye to the Cardinals and welcome in the Cubs on Friday for a three game set. Shaun Marcum will face Edwin Jackson at Citi Field on Friday night.
