At Radio City Music Hall, the New York Rangers officially announced Alain Vigneault as their new head coach. Their former coach, John Tortorella was fired after failing to get out of the second round of the playoffs this season. As great of a defensive head coach Tororella was, his offense had much to be desired. Their offensive game, including power plays, was very disappointing. Their offense had always struggled under Tortorella, even when they went to the Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils last season. This season they went as far as the second round, where they fell to the Boston Bruins in five games. General Manager, Glen Sather had enough and decided it was time for a change.

Alain Vigneault brings a fresh perspective to the Rangers organization. His personality is the exact opposite of Tortorella. The days are over where Tortorella would give the media a hard time. Now with Vigneault, you get a more calm and relaxed coach. He will be a breath of fresh air for the media. When it comes to his résumé, Vigneault has been a very successful coach. As head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, he had taken them to the playoffs in six of the last seven years. One of those years included a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, which they lost in seven games. He compiled a record of 313-170-57 with the Canucks. He also was the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens.

Vigneault is now the 35th head coach of the New York Rangers. His deal was signed for 5 years and $10 million. With the talent on this team and the intelligence he brings, there is no question that the Rangers should be a force in the Atlantic Division. Hopefully Vigneault will lead the Rangers to the Stanley Cup.
