Report: Brian Shaw emerges as lead candidate for Nets coaching job

Brian Shaw has been targeted as the lead candidate for the vacant Nets head coach job. The  Nets are expected to ask for permission to interview Shaw now that the Pacers have been eliminated from the playoffs, according to sources for ESPN’s Marc Stein and Chris Broussard.

Shaw has previously served as an assistant with the Lakers under Phil Jackson, and has spent the last two seasons as the associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Although he is clearly a strong candidate this is far from a done deal. Shaw has already been contacted by the Los Angeles Clippers about their coaching vacancy.

In addition, the Nets have requested permission to interview   Lionel Hollins, who’s contract ran up after this past season. Although there are options out their for both parties, Shaw and the Nets could certainly be a good fit. Shaw is considered one of the top assistants out there despite no previous head coaching experience and the Nets are in a market that makes their job very desirable.

Shaw could run a variation of the triangle offense in Brooklyn, something that is very intriguing with the shooting and distribution skills of Deron Williams combined with the low post fortitude of Brook Lopez. On top of coaching under Phil Jackson, he also played four season for Jackson. There’s little doubt that Jackson must have had a heavy influence on Shaw’s coaching style.

Considering the Nets made their interest in Jackson very widely known, it could certainly be the next best thing to get a coach who at least emulates Jackson’s style, even if he does so without Jackson’s reputation.
