Richards and Hagelin Lead Rangers to Victory

The New York Rangers were playing their 2nd game of a 7 game home stand.  They were opposed by the Carolina Hurricanes.  Before the game started, 3 key players for the Rangers were out:  Ryan Callahan and Michael Del Zotto both sat with injuries while Henrik Lundqvist was a late game scratch with the flu. With Lundqvist out, the Rangers looked to Martin Biron to handle the duties in goal.

The Rangers started off hot when Marion Gaborik scored a goal 3 minutes into the 1st period. It was his 7th goal in the last 11 games. Gaborik’s goal was also his 34th of the season. He leads the team in goals and is tied for 3rd in the league. An interesting play took place towards the end of the period. Ruslan Fedotenko saved a goal while the net was empty when Biron failed to clear the puck. It turned out to be a huge save in the game.

The 2nd period was taken over by Brad Richards and Carl Hagelin. Richards scored 2 goals and Hagelin earned assists for both of them. The Rangers quickly built  a 3-0 lead, however the Hurricanes made things interesting when they scored 2 goals in 32 seconds. The first goal was a power play goal by Tim Brent and the other was scored by Drayson Bowman. At the end of the period, the Rangers still had the lead 3-2.

Even though the Hurricanes made it close, the Rangers would pull away with one more goal by Carl Hagelin. The Rangers went on to win 4-2. Martin Biron had 27 saves. The Rangers earned 2 points with the win and now have a total of 95 points leading the Eastern Conference. Next up for the Rangers are the Pittsburgh Penguins which marks the return of All-Star Sidney Crosby.
