The New York Liberty has gone through a few changes in the past months; one change that has caused quite a stir amongst ther fans is the relocation of their arena.  Madison Square Garden has been the home court to the NY Liberty since founded in 1997, but for the upcoming 2018 season they will be moved to the Westchester County Center where they will play a majority of their home games, an arena that also houses the Westchester Knicks. James Dolan also made his future intentions for the team quite clear, he intends to sell the team and give his primary focus to the New York Knicks. Moving the NY Liberty 20,000 miles away from their home also takes away the support of those who once filled those MSG seats. A longer commute, and a new building with an occupancy that is cut in half has caused many to grumble and feel a sense of disappointment with those who support this NY team.

While a new home may not be the light at the end of the tunnel for the team, the NY Liberty also has a change in staff. Previous Coach Bill Laimbeer has handed over the reigns to Katie Smith, who upon retirement from the WNBA worked along side Laimbeer as an assistant coach for 2 years. After being promoted to Assistant Head Coach, NY Liberty President Isiah Thomas named Katie Smith the Head Coach.  “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to promote Katie Smith – Unquestionably one of the best to ever play the game of basketball…” Said Thomas. ”Katie’s leadership, dedication, and acumen make her the ideal coach to lead our team.” Katie has accomplished a very decorated professional career; 15 year Veteran in the WNBA, 2-time champion, finals MVP, 7 time all star, and WNBA scoring champion in 2001. Also winning three Olympic Gold Medals and 2 FIBA world championships, Smith’s resume speaks for itself.

“I am excited… to continue to work with the amazing women of the New York Liberty in a new role.” Said Smith “I am grateful to have the opportunity to take on this next challenge in my career,” and a challenge it will be indeed, one that she is qualified to take on.
