NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – The St. John’s Red Storm looked out matched Wednesday night against the visiting Georgetown Hoyas. There is no way around saying that this St. John’s team is young and inexperienced. It also doesn’t help that the Red Storm have been without Yankuba Sim. Sim is the Big East Conference leader in blocked shots per game (3.1), and missed his second game due to a broken hand.

The Hoyas clicked on all cylinders from the start, as Georgetown outscored the Red Storm 45-28 in the first half. The physicality that Georgetown played with allowed them to score at will inside. St. John’s really missed Sim’s interior presence, as Georgetown shot 51% from the field this game. The Hoyas’ strength also disrupted what St. John’s wanted to do offensively. The Red Storm only managed to shoot 38% from the field Wednesday, and were limited to shooting contested jumpers.

Georgetown was led by D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera, who had an outstanding game in Madison Square Garden. Smith-Rivera finished with 33 points and six rebounds. The penetration and outside shooting from Smith-Rivera crippled St. John’s chances of winning this ball game. Reggie Cameron also had a good game for Georgetown, tallying 15 points and four rebounds.

St. John’s was led by Ron Mvouika, who scored 15 points (all coming in the second half). Amar Alibegovic was also effective, scoring 12 points until he fouled out of the game.

St. John’s fell to the Hoyas 93-73, and had their school-record eighth straight loss. The Red Storm lack a go-to scorer that can create his own shot opportunities and convert on them consistently. St. John’s is feeling the growing pains from being without their leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison from last season. Harrison averaged 17 points per game last year for the Red Storm, before graduating. Without a “scoring stud”, St. John’s is going to have to trust each other and run the offense.

The Red Storm’s next opponent will be Saturday afternoon, on the road against the #23 ranked Butler Bulldogs.

Stats Of The Game:

  • St. John’s never led once in this game against the Hoyas Wednesday night.
  • The largest lead by Georgetown in the game was 27.
  • St. John’s struggled from the charity stripe, shooting just 75% (24-32).
