St. John’s Handles Fordham, 74-53

NEW YORK CITY – The St. John’s Red Storm came into the game as the best performing basketball team in New York so far this season. The Red Storm were ranked #24 nationally, and showed us why they were on Sunday afternoon when they played against in state rival Fordham University. The Garden was filled with red, and the energy was in the building helping out the Johnnies.

The first half got chippy out of the gate, as there were a couple altercations with players getting tangled up. It would all add up, when Junior Forward Chris Obekpa would be ejected from the game for an elbow after the whistle. The team would respond well to his absence by going with a 5 guard lineup, and full court pressing the Fordham Rams into submission. It was a 9 point game going into half in favor of St. John’s, and they wouldn’t look back. The Red Storm got strong performances from their starter D’Angelo Harrison (22 points. 2 rebounds) and Rasheed Jordan (24 points, 4 steals) who came off the bench.

What was impressive was that when the Red Storm went ahead, they didn’t bring down their intensity level. Their defense was tough all game long and they hustled for everything, which led to a couple highlight dunks that were to much delight from the Johnny faithful. The Red Storm bring a tenacity and physicality that would make a run in the big dance very believeable. Thier next opponent will be Friday at the Garden against (6-1) St. Mary’s, which has been a tournament contender for the past couple years.
