A Rising Star

NY US Open: Rising tennis star Sloane Stephens took center court at Arthur Ashe stadium yesterday. Sloane has started to show she’s a force to be reckoned with in the last year. With Serena Williams as her mentor, most critics are calling her the next US Tennis Star.

In Sloane’s first round match she faced veteran Francesca Schiavone of Italy, the women’s singles first round match on Day Two of the 2012 US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on August 28, 2012 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

It was a rough start for the budding star as she struggled to make the winning shots she’s accustomed to making. But she kept her poise, not allowing the overwhelming crowd and the big stage get the best of  her.  At 3-3 in the second set, Stephens broke Schiavone at love, the game ending on a double-fault.  The Italian had seven of those in the match — five in her first service game.

The 19-year-old Stephens won 6-3, 6-4 against the 2010 French Open champion.  Stephens has advanced to at least the third round at three of her last four Grand Slam events. She’s ranked a career-best 44th.

“Look out, America – a new tennis star is on her way.”  Serena Williams said after her match against Coco Vandeweghe in which she won in straight sets, and said that Sloane inspires her, being so young and so down to earth.
