Knicks Miserable Season Continues With Loss to Mavs

(Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports)

Dallas had their way with the Knicks in the first quarter shooting 55% from the field. It didn’t help that New York turned the ball over 9 times but what made it even worse was how many wide open shots Dallas was able to put up en route to taking a double digit lead. Vince Carter after coming off the bench would score 9 points, all seemingly on uncontested threes.

New York would find themselves trailing by as many as 14 points in the 2nd quarter as the Mavs continued wearing out the Knicks defense. The home team would finally come to life on the shoulders of who else but Carmelo Anthony. Melo continued his recent torrid play by scoring 22 first half points including 17 in the 2nd, when New York made would briefly take the lead but it was Monta Ellis who closed the half out in style with a buzzer beating, trifecta to put Dallas back in front 60-59.

Dallas played like the better team for most of the game but give credit to New York for continuing to fight back each time. This would be the case once again in the waning moments when Dallas would go on a mini 5-0 run to put them ahead 108-100 with only 1:37 remaining in the game. The Knicks would make a run of their own tying the game at 108 following another Melo three. Both teams misfired on next possessions with Dallas forcing New York into a 24 second violation. JR Smith wanted a foul call and replays confirmed that Smith was indeed hit during the shot.

This would set up the final play and Dallas would go to their stalwart, Dirk Nowitzki who was being guarded by Anthony. Dirk would put up a tough shot fading away from the basket and just like Ellis did to end the half; Nowitzki would get a favorable bounce high off the rim which fell right through the cylinder as the buzzer sounded to give the Mavs a 2 point victory.

Final Knicks 108 Mavericks 110

Notes:
Anthony finished the game with 44 points
Anthony and Carter each connected on 7, three pointers
