The New York Jets staged a miraculous comeback in their first game of the 2013 NFL season. In front of 76,957 screaming fans, the Jets defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 18-17.

Rookie Geno Smith made his first career start at Quarterback. It was a very successful start for Smith, who threw for a total of 256 yards and 1 touchdown. His one touchdown came on a 7 yard touchdown pass to Kellen Winslow, who was making his Jets debut. Even though Smith got sacked 5 times and threw an interception, he was able to lead the Jets on a game winning drive. After Tampa Bay regained the lead with 34 seconds remaining, the Jets got the ball back in hopes of pulling away with the victory. Geno Smith started the drive with a 25 yard pass to Kellen Winslow. The turning point came when Smith was hit late by Lavonte David. David pushed Smith, who was already out of bounds. This resulted in a penalty, which gave the Jets an opportunity for a game winning field goal. With 7 seconds left, Nick Folk hit a 48 yard field goal, putting a cap on the comeback victory for the Jets.

Darelle Revis made his return to a chorus of boos. Revis was traded in the offseason by the Jets to the Buccaneers. He was making his first start after missing most of the 2012 season with a knee injury. Also making his return was Santonio Holmes, but he only participated in limited action, catching 1 pass for 13 yards.

Rex Ryan was very pleased with the victory and Geno Smith’s performance, however, Smith knows he has a lot of work cut out for him. “Everything has to improve,” Smith said. “I will never be satisfied.. I want to help improve this organization and myself.”

The Jets will have three days off before they head into a matchup with the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
