In the final Big East battle between two conference powerhouses, Syracuse earned a hard fought overtime victory over Georgetown as Jabril Trawick’s desperation three clanged off the backboard as time expired.

Syracuse was led by another strong performance from James Southerland who hit four three pointers en route to a 13 point performance. However it was an one of the least heralded members of the Orange that helped get Syracuse out to a first half advantage.

With the score tied at 17 and under eight minutes remaining in the half, Trevor Cooney scored 8 of Syracuse’s next 10 points, including two three pointers. This spurred Syracuse on a 12-3 that saw them up by 9 at the end of the half. Cooney had 10 points in the game, all coming in the first half.

Georgetown was able to slowly crawl back into the game in the second half by playing strong defense and by remaining patient in breaking down Syracuse’s vaunted zone defense. A D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera jumper with 3:12 left pulled Georgetown within two, before two free throws from Trawick tied the game up at 49 with 1:47 left.

Baye Keita was able to hit two of his seven free throws to put Syracuse back in the lead until Georgetown’s Otto Porter tied the score with two free throws of his own with just 13.7 seconds remaining. When Michael Carter-Williams jumper missed as time expired, all those in attendance were treated to 5 minutes of extra basketball.

The grinding pace continued in the overtime period until a C.J. Fair dunk with two minutes left gave Syracuse a four point lead and ignited the delirious Syracuse faithful. However with a chance to clinch the game with one free throw, Fair missed two before Trawick’s last ditch effort came up off the mark.

Brandon Triche added 13 points for Syracuse, while Georgetown’s Mikael Hopkins led all scorers with 15 points.
