GREATER LANDOVER, M.D. – The New York Jets played their second preseason game Friday night. This would be New York’s first road test, and another chance for some people lower on the depth chart to make some plays when it counts.

The Washington Redskins would be the opponent, coming off a season where they won the NFC East. Washington went on to beat the Jets, 22-18, Here are three of the biggest statistical takeaways from Friday’s loss:

1. Bryce Petty – 16/26, 242 yards 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 117.8 QB Rating

  • Petty looked really good Friday night, and didn’t turn the ball over most importantly.
  • This good performance has brought up very interesting talks of a new back-up quarterback battle with Geno Smith. Especially, now considering how bad Smith looked Friday against the Redskins.
    • Smith – 6/13, 47 yards 0 TDs, 1 INT, 23.6 QB Rating

2. Robby Anderson – 8 targets, 6 receptions, 131 yards, 1 TD

  • Back on July 30th, we featured Anderson as our first Jet Under The Radar.
  • Anderson’s touchdown catch was a nice grab over a Washington defender, as he then broke away to score the touchdown.
  • Only Jalin Marshall (10 targets) had more targets than Anderson, and Marhsall only had four receptions.
  • Anderson will need to continue to have a strong training camp and some more good preseason performances. This can give him a chance to move up the depth chart.

3. 3rd Down Efficency – 2 for 11

  • You can’t win games in the NFL if you can’t put drives together, especially when you only get but so many. New York in total had 14 drives Friday night.
    • 3 drives ended with a turnover, 6 drives ended with a punt
  • First downs are crucial to keeping a drive going, especially with moving the chains on 3rd down.
  • The field position battle leads to the time of possession battle. Most of the time if you can control the football, you can win the game. The only way to do so is by converting on 3rd down.
    • Washington (35:50 time of possession), New York (24:10 time of possession)
