J.R. Smith undergoes knee surgery

J.R. Smith of the New York Knicks underwent surgery to repair to his troublesome left knee. The 6th man of the year winner had patellar tendon surgery and an arthroscopic procedure to repair a tear in the lateral meniscus of his left knee. His time table for returning is approximately 3 to 4 months, putting the season opener in doubt.

Smith’s injuries were treated at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City by team orthopedist Dr. Answorth Allen. The timing of his surgery seems a little peculiar, as it has been reported Smith’s knee problems started at the beginning of last years training camp. The Knicks and Smith wanted to see if the injuries would have went away with rest, but the petallar tendon and a tear in the meniscus are something that usually do not heal to full strength without undergoing a procedure.
