The Jets should be thankful that it is only preseason after losing their opener to the Detroit Lions 23-3. The high expectations of the 2015 Jets defense looked rather disappointing on the first drive. Poor tackling allowed Golden Tate to escape through three defenders for a 35 yard touchdown on 1 of his 2 receptions. Things didn’t prove any better on the offensive side of the ball with the Lions D continually halting Jets drives.

– 5 Three and Outs
– 1 Fumble Lost
– 1 Kneel Down to end the Half

With the negative side there has to be a positive side too right? Since Ryan Fitzpatrick’s play was held to one FG ending drive Bryce Petty got extended playing time. This was a good thing since he seems to be the frontrunner for the backup quarterback role. Petty seemed comfortable at times in the pocket, but was unable to move the chains much leading to 5 three and outs. The bright spot to take out of his first professional appearance was the fact that in basically three quarters of play he managed to keep the ball out of the Lions defenders hands.

Defensive Player Spotlight

– CB Marcus Williams
His great play in camp turned into a great performance on the field. Williams had 3 tackles and 1 interception late in the first half to keep the deficit at 7 going into the second half 10-3.

Offensive Player Spotlight

-RB Chris Ivory
Even though he didn’t match Powell’s 8 carries for 35 yards his key 19 yard run and 25 total rushing yards helped move the chains and end a drive with their only score of the night.

Preseason Week 1 is in the books. Hopefully after reviewing some game film the Jets defense can see what went wrong and return to the top form that NFL fans expected to see. Going into preseason week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons we should see a little more of Fitzpatrick and the first team Jets offense. I expect to see the offense leading to a better flow finishing off a drive with a touchdown. There were many ups and downs in the first preseason game, but keep in mind, it was just that the first preseason game.

“It’s the first preseason game, We’ve got a lot of tackling to do. If the first [defense] played the whole game, I’d be more concerned, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. I never said we were going to be sharp off the bat, but we’ve got some stuff to look at.” – Todd Bowles
