New York Football is finally underway for the 2013 season. The Jets officially open camp today, in SUNY-Cortland, but what to expect is anyone’s guess. Will this be Rex’s last camp as Jets head coach?

Coming into camp, it seems as if it is Mark Sanchez’s job to lose. Make no mistake, he will be on a short leash, and Geno Smith will look to take advantage of that. It is hard to believe that the former 5th overall pick is now fighting for his NFL job, after winning 4 playoff games in his first 2 seasons, reaching the AFC Championship games in both of those campaigns. Did missing Sanchez’s ‘Jets West’ cost Smith to be behind the 8-ball already? How will his teammates respond to a rookie QB, after going to battle with Sanchez for the past 4 seasons? This certainty will be a story to watch all season long, and look for Rex to go with who he feels most comfortable with; as he is fighting for his job security as well.

The Jets Wide Receiving corps got a much needed boost, signing Braylon Edwards yesterday. The WR’s will also be another position to keep an eye out for, as Santonio Holmes is still recovering from his foot injury, and they do not have much depth behind him. This is the time for last years second round pick, Stephen Hill to step up after turning in a disappointing rookie season. The Jets also have TE Kellen Winslow who is looking to resurrect his career, but his health also has to be questioned after bouncing around the league for a couple of years.

Marty Mornhinweg, the third offensive coordinator in 3 years for the Jets is looking to install his ‘West Coast’ system. Look for Sanchez to adjust his game, hitting short passes and pumping so life into a pool that is short on talent. Will the West Coast system be to Smith’s advantage, as he is more mobile than Sanchez?

The Jets also agreed to terms with first rounder DT Sheldon Richardson, while the other first rounder, CB Dee Milliner remains unsigned.
