Knicks’ Free Agents Signed

NEW YORK, September 11, 2012 New York Knickerbockers Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Glen Grunwald announced today that the team has signed free-agent guard Oscar Bellfield, center Henry Sims and forwards John Shurna and Mychel Thompson to contracts. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Bellfield, 6-2, 190-pounds, played four seasons at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, finishing his collegiate career as the Mountain West Conference’s all-time assists leader with 582.  As a senior, he averaged 9.8 points, 5.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds over 32.0 minutes in 35 games.

Sims, 6-10, 245-pounds, played four seasons at Georgetown University, averaging 11.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.36 blocks over 27.5 minutes in 33 games as a senior.

Shurna, 6-9, 220-pounds, played four seasons at Northwestern University, setting the school’s all-time scoring mark with 2,038 points. He led the Big 10 in scoring as a senior with 20 points on 44-percent shooting from downtown, 5.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.67 blocks over 37.3 minutes in 33 games.

Thompson, 6-6, 211-pounds, appeared in five games (three starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, averaging 3.6 points, 1.4 assists and 1.0 rebounds over 19.0 minutes. He began the season playing for the Erie Bay Hawks of the NBA Development League following a four-year playing career at Pepperdine University. He was a member of the Knicks Summer League entry in Las Vegas this summer, averaging 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds over 20.0 minutes in five games.
