New York: The Knicks and Wizards agree to a trade, Knicks send Denis Smith Jr. Who feel out of favor with the new coaching staff with his lack of defensive and offensive skills . Veteran point guard Alford Payton was including in the deal. Payton is known for his offensive abilities as a slasher and his skills to take command of the offense.
In return the Knicks received Ish Smith (PG), Moritz Wagner (C) and Jerome Robinson (G). Smith will be a key component in this trade as a backup point guard .A key differentiator between him and Ish is size and the ability to defend at the point of attack. The Knicks are still in search of starting point guard to lead the team.
The new regime hopes that the moves will give the team more free agency flexibility to obtain quality free agents to begin the 2021 season. Building the culture through free agency will allow the team to be more competitive at the start of the season, instead of building through the draft.
