NEW YORK CITY – The Tunnel to Towers Foundation held its 23rd annual “5K Run and Walk” on Sunday to honor the fallen first responders of 9/11.
Despite the wet, windy and slightly chilly conditions with temperatures in the mid 60s, more than 40,000 participants and spectators made the event another rousing success. The pre-race fear of some participants that this year’s T2T would be politicized ahead of the upcoming Presidential election proved to be unfounded.
Around 40,000 participants showed up for the event, which follows the final footsteps of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller on September 11, 2001, from the Brooklyn-Battery Bridge to the World Trade Center.
Finding the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel closed to vehicles for security reasons, Siller ran the nearly two miles into lower Manhattan carrying 60 pounds of gear on his back.
