New York Knicks 113 Brooklyn Nets 83 F

In the first matchup of the season in the “Battle of The Boroughs,” Manhattan’s team reigned supreme against the beleaguered Brooklyn squad. Brook Lopez put forth a strong effort, scoring 24 points and grabbing nine rebounds, but it would not be nearly enough to beat the hot-shooting New York Knicks. Iman Shumpert led the way from downtown, connecting on 5-7 three-pointers and finishing with a season-high 17 points. As a team, the Knicks shot 57% from the field and an even better 59% from three-point territory. Carmelo Anthony finished with a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds and adding 19 points.

The game was heated throughout, resulting in Andrea Bargnani being ejected in the fourth quarter, after picking up his second technical foul for jawing with Kevin Garnett. In all, there were a total of six technical fouls between the two teams. The Nets were without starting point guard Deron Williams for an eighth straight game. According to a team source, Williams is projected to return to the lineup this upcoming Tuesday December 10th, as the Nets will host their fellow Atlantic Division opponent Boston Celtics. It will be the first time the Nets will face the team they acquired aging stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry from in the offseason. Along with Pierce, Terry remains out with a knee injury. Next up for the Nets will be the Milwaukee Bucks, in an 8:30 pm tip-off Saturday night from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

Notes: Prior to the start of tonight’s game, there was a moment of silence for world icon Nelson Mandela. Mandela passed away today at the age of 95. He is most notable for bringing together a racially-divided South African nation and becoming the country’s first black president. NBA Commissioner David Stern considered Mandela “one of the most powerful and inspirational leaders in the world and a great friend of the NBA.” (Courtesy: ESPN)

According to Brooklyn Nets beat writer Tim Bontemps, of the New York Post, assistant coach Lawrence Frank is putting together a legal team to seek a buyout with the team. This comes just days after Frank was demoted to handling daily reports, by head coach Jason Kidd. Frank is currently the highest paid assistant coach in the NBA, after signing a six-year $6 million dollar contract this offseason.
