Harvey Night proves to be a Huge Success

April 15, 2015: 43,947 fans came out to see the Mets home opener on Monday a record crowd on opening day. What did they do for an encore they declared Tuesday night’s game to be Matt Harvey day. And it proved to be a success over 38,000 fans packed the stadium for Tuesday’s game to see Harvey Pitch at Citi Field for the first time since his abrupt injury ended his 2013 campaign. As an attendee of the game I can tell you that the crowd was louder than usual if not the loudest I have witnessed.

It was nice to see the stadium that loud and involved with every 2 strike count the fans got on their feet and chanted Harvey’s name hoping for a strikeout. Harvey got 8 strikeouts in six innings. The crowd was electrifying throughout the whole game but after Terry Collins was ejected for a catcher’s interference call the crowd went nuts and began to chant Terry Collins name after his ejection. They then began doing the wave for about 10 minutes.  Daniel Murphy’s homerun which would have been a double last year was made possible by the new dimensions at Citi field. The new dimensions were specifically designed to favor left handers especially since three of the Mets big bats are left handed in Granderson, Duda and Murphy. It was 6-4 heading into the ninth as Familia recorded his third save of the season although he gave up a homerun to make it close he was able to hold on for a 6-5 win.

The important thing was that Harvey was able to bring 38,000 people to Citi field to see him pitch at home for the first time since the 2013 All-star game at Citi field. Harvey is perhaps the Mets greatest asset and promotional tool, with T-shirt Friday 2 nights away Citi field will give out a Matt Harvey T-shirt to every fan in attendance we will see how many fans will show up on Friday. The Mets not only missed Harvey’s arm in the rotation last year but they also missed the financial boost he brings when he pitches and tonight proved what Harvey brings to the Mets.
