New York Giants Saquon Barkley: ‘It’s Up to Guys Like Me to Change the Narrative’

New York Giants

Currently, the narrative amongst the NFL surrounding the running back position isn’t in a positive light. Arguably, it’s in the worst state it’s ever been in the history of the NFL. In the last decade, the NFL has transitioned into a more passing attack-friendly league rather than power running. However, over time, the running back position has continued to be devalued by organizations and fans around the league. Unfortunately, many of the league’s top running backs are suffering as many will not be compensated for their worth, however New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley wants to retake that narrative.

“I had an epiphany,” Barkley states. “No, the reality of it is I followed my heart, obviously I heard what everyone was saying, but I just continued to follow my heart. Then, looking at it from a business point, … the value of the running back is going down and someone’s got to make it change. God willing, I can be the reason for the change.”

“When you talk about legacy, I know how great this position is and it’s on guys like myself, Christian [McCaffrey], Najee [Harris], and  JT [Jonathan Taylor] to go out there and change the narrative,” Barkley continues.

Saquon Barkley Embracing the Challenge

The Pressure Barkley is applying to himself and his peers can be seen as overbearing, however Barkley is embracing the challenge. In fact, he believes when players are great they’re going to be great no matter the circumstance.

Prior to the holdout of the summer by Barkley, many of his teammates spoke out in support of his decision. Therefore, rejoining the team has helped bring excitement and even greater trust within the locker room. Later in the season, this will only benefit this young talented team and allow them to play for one another.

“I’m here now and I’m happy to be here,” Barkley elaborates. “Happy to be in the locker room with my teammates, I’ve received a lot of love from those guys. Ultimately, telling me they missed OTAs wasn’t the same without me. Not to mention, I believe in this team and I’m excited for this year.”

Barkley’s impact on this organization is nothing short of cultivating and polarizing. It’ll be exciting to see if this contract debacle leads to another breakout season for the superstar running back. Not to mention, the extra motivation of running backs around the league not receiving their respect.
